Sinigang is a famous Filipino recipe that has been cooked in many homes in the country. This traditional stew is being introduced by different Filipino communities worldwide and is also a classic item served in Filipino restaurants.

This dish is known for having a strong flavor in its soup ultimately loved by many Filipinos, which makes it memorable. Its distinct taste is because of its sour and great flavor from adding tamarind in the recipe.  Sinigang can be cooked with different kinds of protein such as chicken, pork, beef and even with shrimp. How is Sinigang different from Paksiw?

Both are different from having a distinct souring agent. Sinigang usually is cooked with tamarind or kamias. Paksiw on the other hand makes use of vinegar as its contributing flavor and has minimal broth in the recipe. Check out our Tuna Head Paksiw sa gata.

What are the health benefits of Tamarind?

Tamarind has essential nutrients that can help assist with lowering blood pressure and heart disease. This tropical fruit, when cooked up for hot soup, can also be an herbal remedy for coughs and colds.

Cooking Tips

  • When mixing the tamarind flavor in the cooking pan, mix the flavor and a portion of the pre-cooked soup in a small bowl, and then pour the mixture in the pot along with the other ingredients.
  • You can also add salmon belly to your recipe really to enjoy that special fish in Sinigang
  • If possible, use Tamarind paste in the recipe than the usual powder to capture a more organic taste.
